They had forgotten their Aristotle. More than 2,000 years ago he wrote of what can happen within the form, when “one thing takes the place of another, so that the ancient laws will remain, while the power will be in the hands of those who have brought about revolution in the state.”

I know this topic is a little old but I would like to recommend a great book that discusses the history of the Great Depression. The book is called "The Forgotten Man" by Amity Shlaes. Amity Shlaes is a senior fellow in economic history at the Council on Foreign Relations and has written other books.
When I was younger and was taught history, I was told that the Great Depression was caused by greedy businessman that had bought stocks on credit.
The truth is, it was caused by the Federal Reserve, bad government policies, and a drought that lasted for a while. The depression did not need to last as long as it did but stupid people in the government that hated business made policies (New Deal) that made it worse. It was so bad that by 1937 the country was headed back into depression. If it wasn't for a world war it may have taken a much longer time for the economy to recover.
The main lesson from the book is that the New Deal poored billions into the economy with very little results, pushed new social programs that could not be sustained, and attempted to go around the Constitution to achieve their goals.
Who says history doesn't repeat itself?
